Melanie Avery, Ph.D.

Dr. Melanie Avery is a licensed clinical psychologist from the DMV area and a proud Morgan State University alumni. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Traumatic Stress of the Salem VA Medical Center. Dr. Avery is a full-time staff psychologist at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center. Her clinical areas of interest focus on the treatment of anxiety and substance use disorders. Additionally, she is passionate about addressing issues of minorities’ mental health, positive youth development, and adult resilience and well-being.

Dr. Avery joined BHP as a part-time associate in 2018 and currently offers child and adult individual therapy and assessment services. She prides herself on offering a safe, warm, and validating environment with a primary goal of fostering healthy development and treatment progress. In line with the assumptions of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, it is Dr. Avery’s belief that a strong therapeutic relationship can help people change in ways that bring them closer to their own ultimate goals. It is Dr. Avery’s hope that she can be a therapeutic tool in your journey.
